DIY Sugarcraft and Cake Decorating

DIY Cake Decorating is easier than it looks! I made my first celebration cake 21 years ago for my daughter's christening and have dabbled with cakes for allsorts of occasions ever since.

I am self-taught in the art of sugarcraft and cake decorating and gained most of my skills from sugarcraft and cake decorating books and magazines, just simply following their instructions. I picked up lots of tips along the way and now I can pretty much copy a cake design from a picture, making it up as I go to give it my own personal touch.

In this lens I am going to show you some of my easy cake decorating designs and I hope that they inspire you to have a go at some of your own too.

Pink and White Cradle Christening Cake

This is the first cake I baked and decorated myself, my first attempt at DIY cake decorating. I decided to have a go when I saw an article in a DIY Cake Decorating magazine, after first promising myself that if it didn't turn out ok, it was fine to go out and buy one!

I followed the instructions in the magazine to the letter. It told me everything I needed, ingredients and equipment - although most cakes don't actually need special equipment and can be created using the bits and pieces you have around your kitchen. The article told me how to mix and bake the cake and then gave me a step-by-step breakdown of how to use the sugarpaste and food colouring to decorate it.

I was surprised at how EASY it actually was to get the sugarpaste to do what you wanted it to, and the great thing about it is that if you make a mistake you can roll it back up and start again!

When i look at it now I can find fault, but at the time I was rather pleased with myself! I was also pleased with the congratulations and comments I got from friends and family and this was the beginning of my love/hate relationship with DIY Sugarcraft and Cake Decorating - I "hate" the thought of starting on a new cake project, but once I get motivated and get on with it I just "love" the finished products!
